In collaboration with AIO Core and Kyocera, Kioxia presents the new prototype of its “Broadband SSD,” which uses an optical interface. Instead of PCIe 4.0 as with the first generation, PCIe 5.0 is now used, which could double the throughput.
So far, Kioxia has not provided any performance information and is generally lacking in technical details. However, the editorial team has asked the responsible PR agency for more information and will respond with a response.
The new prototype uses AIO Core’s IOCORE optical transceiver and Kyocera’s optin optoelectronic integration module. An image shows the actual Koxia SSD operating in the standard 2.5″ form factor on a board with optical technology.

The main objective is energy savings.
This prototype is also the result of the Japanese “Next Generation Green Data Center Technology Development” project. The campaign set the goal of developing new techniques to save more than 40% energy in next-generation data centers.

The transition from an electrical interface to an optical connection should “significantly increase the physical distance between computers and storage devices,” “without negatively affecting energy efficiency or high signal quality,” according to the current press release. This ensures greater efficiency and flexibility in more environmentally friendly data centers of the future.
This new prototype of a PCIE 5.0-compatible high-bandwidth SSD with an optical interface has the potential to literally revolutionize data centers and make them sustainable.

First prototype with no performance loss over the 40m cable
Last summer, Kioxia demonstrated the first prototype of a high-bandwidth SSD at FMS 2024. According to media reports, it achieved the same performance over a 40-meter fiber optic cable as a conventional SSD. Topics: Kioxia PCIe 5.0 Research SSD Storage Technologies Storage Source: Kioxia
