With the GeForce RTX 5090D, NVIDIA has also launched a special variant of Blackwell’s new flagship GeForce RTX 5090 for the Chinese market, which differs from the original only in its AI performance. Therefore, it is not subject to US sanctions. Now, Nvidia has reportedly announced the shipment for the time being.
New sanctions on the horizon?
Since the US also banned the export of the H20 Hopper China last week without a license and has not yet granted this license, the RTX 5090D could be the next victim of the sanctions, even though it was so safe with its limited AI performance. It cannot be ruled out that sanctions are currently being increasingly used in the context of the US-China customs dispute as another means of exerting pressure.
Both industry insiders report that NVIDIA partners have reportedly informed the Chiphell Forum and Benchlife of a preliminary halt to deliveries of the RTX 5090D. According to reports, Nvidia is not expected to justify this step with new sanctions, but has even suggested speculation along these lines.
Nvidia under special observation
Nvidia is currently under special observation in the US by the House of Representatives, which has asked the group to provide detailed information on the company’s HPC accelerator business by the end of April. The purpose of the investigation is to determine how HPC accelerators are still being used under sanctions today and are being used there for training KISs such as Deepseek.
