With the announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2, the company also announced a series of new launch titles to revise some previous Switch 1 titles and adapt them for the new console. Which games get an “edition”? How much do these costs? And what does it offer a player? An overview.

Basically, almost all Nintendo Switch 1 titles can also be played on the Switch 2. The previous Mario Kart 8 and Mario Party Jamboree run without fees or an upgrade pack. However, this compatibility comes with the restriction that Switch 1 titles cannot (fully) utilize the new features and performance of the Nintendo Switch 2. This is where “editions” come in.

How do editions work?

Selected games receive a “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition,” which should optimize the for the new console. This allows players to use higher resolutions, higher refresh rates, and new Switch 2-exclusive gaming features such as mouse control (new Joy-Con movement) or Cameraplay (player faces are involved). Nintendo also promises more stylish graphics, HDR support, and faster loading times. The new, yet-unknown SOC in the Switch 2 should only be fully utilized by edition games. However, the features vary from title to title. An overview is provided at the end of the article.

Buy editions: by upgrading or as a new game

According to Nintendo, the editions can be purchased in two ways: if the player already owns the game on a Nintendo Switch 1 and now has a Switch 2 in front of them, an “upgrade pack” can be purchased. This then contains all the improvements and upgrades the Switch 1 version to a Nintendo Switch 2 edition. Nintendo says this should apply to games on both game cards and digital versions.

Upgrade packs will be available at retail, in the eShop, and in the Nintendo Store. Nintendo emphasizes that the upgrade pack does not replace the Switch 1 version, but provides the player with a new version for Switch 2: Switch 1 and Switch 2, then use different features with different functions. A complete repurchase is also possible.

The second option is for Switch 2 owners who have not yet purchased the game for the Switch 1: Nintendo will offer physical and digital versions of the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition in the retail store and online. These will then contain both the Switch 1 version as well as the overall package and the upgrade pack.

Prices still unknown.

Nintendo has not yet announced the prices of the upgrade packs and editions. Rumors suggest that the upgrade packs could cost $10 to $15, or around 9 to 14 euros. Given that the launch titles for the Nintendo Switch 2 have reached new prices, with Mario Kart World costing up to 90 euros, they could also be higher.

Which titles are getting a Switch 2 Edition?

Nintendo has already announced a Switch 2 version for a total of six titles. These include Mario Party, Zelda, Pokemon, Kirby, and Metroid Prime 4. A release date is still pending.

The only game to receive a fixed release date so far: Mario Party Jamboree. With the Switch 2 version, the game receives higher resolutions, higher refresh rates, and also the ability to use mouse controls for Joy-Cons. With a connected camera, the faces of up to four players are permanently displayed in the game, thus also enabling new game modes. A trailer provides the first details. All games in the overview
