With the GameCube controller, Nintendo has announced a new edition of the 2001 controller for the new Switch 2. The input device comes with USB-C, a new C button, and a wireless connection to the console. The sale is exclusive to Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) members.
Wired GameCube Controller with USB-C
The new GameCube controller is modeled after the 14-year-old classic, but technically it’s a very strong new device based on the original. The Nintendo Switch 2 version has a C button, A, B, X, R, L, and Z buttons, a D-pad, and other control buttons in a classic layout. However, the C button, which can be used for Game Chat on the Nintendo Switch 2, is new and is also installed on the new Joy-Cons. The controller’s interior has also been considered: a battery is now integrated, which can be charged via a USB-C connection. This is necessary because the Nintendo GameCube controller is connected wirelessly to the Switch 2. On the back, there are also the four characteristic LEDs that, as usual, display the player number or battery level.

Only usable in GameCube titles
The controller is likely primarily compatible with GameCube titles, which Nintendo will offer online as part of the Switch 2 subscription. On the Switch 1, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is also supported, according to Nintendo. The company hasn’t ruled out additional support yet, but GameCube controller support for the Wii U was only unlocked in Super Smash Bros. at the time.
Sale exclusively for subscription members
The sale is taking place exclusively through Nintendo My Shop and is therefore only accessible to players with a Nintendo Switch Online membership, which costs at least €19.99 per year. The controller is expected to go on sale alongside the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5th.
Nintendo has not yet announced the price. For comparison: the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller costs $79.99 in the retail price range. Original 2001 Controller with Usable Adapter
As the computer base discovered in the footnotes, Switch 2 classics can also be played with the original 2001 GameCube controller. According to Nintendo, however, the prerequisite is that players have the Wii U GameCube adapter.
The original Nintendo adapter is no longer widely available, and prices are therefore very high. However, in a price comparison, there are comparable accessories for as little as 20 euros. However, players have to do without features like USB-C or a wireless connection.
Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics can also be played with an original Nintendo GameCube controller via the GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U.
