Nvidia app in background: “Game filters and photo mode” option can cost 85 FPS
Since November, the Nvidia application (first impression) has been available as a replacement for the old Control Center in the GeForce driver and GeForce Experience (GFE) in the software in the final version 1.0; the latest driver already includes it in place of GFE. However, the installation may harm performance. But there is an antidote.
Nvidia app may cost FPS
X user Sebastian Castellanos noticed that some games run slower than before when the Nvidia app and not GeForce Experience is running in the background. Castellanos and Tom’s Hardware then backed up this finding with tangible metrics: Performance dropped by double-digit percentages in some locations.
But during the scans, it was also noticed that the problem can be fixed if the “Game filters and photo mode” option is disabled in the Nvidia app settings.
The issue also occurs if the option is enabled generally but is not actively used in the respective games.
Nvidia confirmed the behavior
Nvidia has now confirmed this behavior and recommends disabling the option as a quick countermeasure.
We are aware of a reported performance issue related to game filters and are actively investigating it. You can turn off game filters from NVIDIA App Settings > Features > Overlay > Game Filters & Photo Mode, then restart your game.
So it should only be a matter of time before a new version of the application or a new driver no longer presents this problem.
