Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 TI: The strongest Geforce GTX is eight years old 89 comments
The anniversary of the GTX Titan X with 12 GB VRAM follows another this week: the Geforce GTX 1080 Ti celebrates its birthday. It has been eight years since the GTX graphics card, which is still the most powerful in March 2017, reached retail. In retrospect, the former Top Model marks the culmination of the GeForce GTX era.
The last top model GeForce under 1,000 euros
The Pascal generation was remembered by many gamers. The graphics cards of the GeForce GTX 10 series were generally considered fast, efficient and given the performance offered. With the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti (test), Nvidia managed to outperform the GEFORCE GTX 1080 in the UHD benchmarks by around 35% in spring 2017. The lead to the predecessor GeForce GTX 980 TI (test) and also to the Radeon R9 Fury X (test), the fastest Radeon card Radeon at the time was a percentage. The Radeon Rx Vega 64 (test) knew how to half this distance. Nvidia was de facto a whole generation lead. With the large 11 GB GDDR5X graphics memory, the GEFORCE GTX 1080 Ti was eight years ago And there are further contrasts: The 471 mm² GP102 GPU did not come to 12 billion transistors, was already happy with 250 watts TDP and thus on the Black-Silver GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition with an 8-pin and 6-pin connection.

On the one hand, later, the top models of the GeForce brand still worked under the RTX prefix and, on the other hand, became more expensive. In fact, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti is still the fastest graphics card that adorns the GTX abbreviation – and probably also the last, because Nvidia hired 16 years in 16 years. Although the new GTX accelerators of the GEForce GTX 16 series also appeared parallel to the first RTX graphics cards, but it was only exploited by the entry-level segment up to the performance level of the GEForce GTX 1070.
Now an OPA graphics card
The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, on the other hand, was withdrawn from the market in autumn 2018, but knew a few more years to play above: the direct successor GeForce RTX 2080 Ti (test) brought Raytracing and Tensor Core and thus later thanks to DLSS, but were only 35% faster in gridizing scenarios. The performance increase was nevertheless greater than the BOP of GeForce RTX 4090 for RTX 5090.
In the meantime, however, the ravages of time are eating away at the old Halo product. The DirectX 12 graphics API that is common today is not supported in the full specification levels, 11 GB VRAM is gradually also in WQHD and comparable performance was already available at the beginning of 2021 for around 330 euros with the GeForce RTX 3060 (test).
