NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 5090 and 5080: Founders Editions Went to Bots 192 comments by 3:00 p.m.
Yesterday’s market launch of GeForce RTX 5090 (test) and RTX 5080 (test) was a big disappointment for gamers, also in the Computer Core Forum. Apparently the Founders’ Editions were sold out before 3:00 p.m. – and are now turning up on eBay. It doesn’t look much better with custom designs. Memories of 2020 become vivid.
Founders Edition sold out before market launch
In fact, the founding editions of the GeForce RTX 5080 and even the RTX 5090 were also sold in the German region, but most gamers won’t have noticed anything. Unlike the start of previous RTX generations, NVIDIA with RTX 50 in this country has chosen the online retailer Proshop as a partner for the sale of the Founder Editions. Two circumstances made it possible. On the one hand, buyers already knew the links to the store pages in Proshop, through which the founders were sold. It’s unclear whether the specific URL was correctly guessed, read by API, or stabbed from dealer circles. In all cases, a bot that was caused by a German discord server was responsible for the successful purchases. PCGH wants to be able to confirm this process with reference to the corresponding Discord usernames and the script.
The founders of the editions on the Dutch market and in other countries were allegedly exploited by the program – before the official start of sales. Proshop has not yet commented on the situation, the same goes for Nvidia. After sales actually began at 3:00 p.m., gamers were only able to look at the availability of Founders Editions on NVIDIA’s website from “currently not available” to “currently not available.”
Availability only with scalpers
With a view of the price comparison, GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 is a miserable availability that potentially sub-breaks the RTX 30 market level in fall 2020. A Geforce RTX 5090 is not listed at all, the Geforce RTX 5080 has once again been sporadic. Sporadically, the GEForce RTX 5080 has again been sporadic. Available from dealers at prices of 3,000 to 4,000 euros. Scalper offers different variants of the graphics card, including the Founders Edition, starting at around 1,800 euros on eBay. In the meantime, German private providers have also appeared with a GeForce RTX 5090, it starts from 5,000 euros. The editorial team expressly advises buying a new graphics card at excessive prices and without warranty as well as warranty claims on eBay.
The view of the old generation and in particular the outgoing Top Model Geforce RTX 4090, which is becoming more and more expensive since autumn 2024, half a year ago the GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 (Super) were available from 1,650 euros or 1,000 euros; Now both graphics cards now cost at least 2,900 euros and 1,200 euros. As a result, the older generation is no longer able to mitigate the price jump and gaps in availability of RTX 50. If you don’t need to buy urgently, you should also adapt here.
