After Sony has already established a few variants of Blu-ray storage media, the complete one is now followed. Starting February 2025, production of all Blu-ray media for end users must be stopped. MINIDISCS and MINIDV cassettes are no longer produced.
More Blu-rays for blank sales
“We will define the production of all models of Blu-Ray-Disc media, MINIDISCS for recording, MD data for recording and MINIDV cassettes from February 2025”, explains the message traditional by the machine of SonyJapan.
As early as July 2024, Sony had confirmed that some Blu-ray variants are being discontinued for the consumer market. Among them, there were writeable Blu-ray discs with 25 GB, 50 GB, 100 GB and 128 GB. In addition, about 40% of the workforce is expected to be released in the optical disc division.
Business production would continue
For business sales (B2B), production is expected to continue for the time being. From yesterday’s post it is unclear if this still applies to this market. However, the Flat Panels HD website writes that movies on Blu-ray are not affected.
Sony’s release is for home recordable Blu-ray (BD-R and BD-RE) and will not impact the production of Blu-ray and UHD movies that you can purchase and collect. These films are and will continue to be stamped in large facilities.

At least for its PlayStation series game consoles, Sony also has its own interest in the storage medium, because they are (still) sold alongside the digital version in Blu-ray format. However, the Blu-ray drive is already only an option for new models such as PlayStation 5 Pro.
LG no longer sells Blu-ray players
The fact that Blu-ray is no longer in demand as a storage medium is also noted elsewhere. In December 2024, South Korean electronics manufacturer LG completely said goodbye to the sale of Blu-ray players. LG has not released new models since 2018. Previously, Samsung and Oppo have already returned to the declining market.
Streaming takes over
Blu-ray disc reached its peak in the mid-2010s, during which Blu-ray was later reached in the United States in 2017. Since then, major streaming providers such as Netflix and Prime Video have taken over. the relay, later also Disney + and all other Media companies that have had to be reoriented since then.
