Glow-in-the-dark back and LEDs
The Community Edition design is the most striking, as the smartphone has a glow-in-the-dark back. The back of the Phone (2a) Plus Community Edition is tinted with a phosphorescent material that gives off a soft green glow after exposure to sunlight in dark environments. It does not require any electricity and its operation depends entirely on how long the smartphone has been in the sun. For this, Astrid Vanhuyse and Kenta Akasaki worked with Nothing design director Adam Bates and CMF designer Lucy Birley. In addition, it has three LED light strips around the cameras.
The packaging has also been redesigned and includes reflective elements and a macro cutout of the phone. Designer Ian Henry Simmonds was responsible for the implementation and brought the glow-in-the-dark design to the packaging.
Exclusive digital content
In addition to hardware, the Phone (2a) Plus Community Edition offers exclusive digital content. Andrés Mateos and software designers at Nothing also used AI to create six wallpapers offered as a “Connected Collection” exclusively on the Community Edition.
