Pioneers of Pagonia 0.11.0 Beta: Update Brings Winter Atmosphere and Secret Artifacts

Pioneers of Pagiona provides the first look at the Winter Update with Beta 0.11.0, as it not only expands on the previous Magic update and introduces a new tutorial card, but also puts players in the mood for the cold season with a winter card should do it.

New cozy winter menu

To get into the festive mood of the pioneer world, the developers are including in the new update a pre-made winter map in which the pioneers of Pagiona want to celebrate the winter season. To really get the party started, winter pastries still need to be on the menu, but there are thieves and bandits in the mountains who want to disrupt the celebrations. The map contains special building styles such as decorated warehouses and taverns.

At least at first it doesn’t snow on the map. It remains to be seen whether the promise of an “all-new, bright and sparkling WINTER SEASON map with limited winter season changes (and so many cool surprises!”) means the snow can fall.

Meanwhile, the pioneers help the player on the tutorial map.

The pioneers who don’t really party on the winter map introduce new players to the new explanatory map through the wonderful world of Pagiona. They must be able to familiarize themselves step by step with the different types of buildings and their different functions.

Updated Secret Artifact Build Magic

With version 0.11.0 of the , the developer is also expanding the magical content from the latest update to include “Arcane Artifacts”. Players can now use these secret artifacts to strengthen their magic troops introduced in the Magic update. Magical gems can be found by treasure hunters or, rarely, “lost on the ground”. If both do not lead to success, neutral resellers now also offer them.

Witches and wizards then draw energy from the artifacts once they are stored in the treasury. However, the damage bonus only accumulates over time; the small crystals will probably not develop their full strength until later.

Other optimizations and adjustments

In addition to the three big innovations, the beta also brings bug fixes, improvements and balancing updates, which can be viewed on in the change history. Artifacts can now be set as a storage category, fields can be copied more easily and some minor graphical improvements can be found. The Monument of Wisdom and the Lighthouse also cost less to build.

The update can be obtained in advance by logging into the beta program via Steam → right-click on the game → Properties → Betas.

New roadmap later this month

This means that the previously known development plan from April 2024 is slowly coming to an end. Envision Entertainment has now delivered on all of its big promises for the current year, including a co-op mode, installing rock mines, and introducing magical elements.

According to the developer, a new roadmap for the coming year can be expected in the coming weeks, because Volker Wertich does not want to think about the end of development yet; Envision Entertainment plans to continue developing Pioneers of Pagonia for some time. Prospects include: a brewery, larger maps, modding support and decorative elements.

Developers interviewed

In November, the editorial team welcomed Dirk Ringe, CEO of CB-Funk Envision Entertainment, to the Techconseil podcast, who has worked with Siedler founder Volker Wertich for over 30 years and is largely responsible for developing the Very lively independent construction game. In the he revealed many details and answered exciting questions about technology:

How did the settler veterans end up developing their own independent development game after the creative break with ? How and why did they use their own engine? What hardware is Pioneers of Pagonia developed on? How are system requirements actually determined? And what argues for or against the use of ray tracing and upscaling?

Answers to these and other topics can be found in the 91st episode of CB Radio.

CB radio can not only be listened to via the Podigee player embedded in this article, but also easily subscribed and listened to directly in the podcast apps of your choice. The Techconseil podcast is available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music and also on Deezer.
