It’s been over a year since the construction game by Siedler inventor Volker Wertich entered Early Access on Steam. It’s not expected to end this year: Pioneers of Pagonia will also receive new expansions and updates in 2025, which has already been torn up a new roadmap. But the game is becoming more expensive.

Roadmap for second-year access at the beginning

On December 13, 2023, Pioneers of Pagonia was released. Following an economic, cooperative, and mining update, as well as numerous smaller quality-of-life patches, the fourth major and so far most significant expansion of the Building Act, the Magic Update, arrived at the end of November 2024. A smaller winter update was also submitted in December. Meanwhile, the game has also received over 150 smaller quality-of-life updates, according to the developers from Ingelheim Am Rhein.

However, it became clear in summer 2024: Early Access will follow the first, as Volker Wertich revealed in an interview with TechAstuce at Gamescom. A roadmap now reveals what’s coming this year.

Probably the most important announcement: with the game’s yet-to-be-released version 1.0, there is to be a full-fledged story campaign that will offer multiple difficulty levels and be fully playable in cooperative mode. The story for the campaign is to be written by an established fantasy author. Which author is unclear at this time.

On the way to version 1.0, the developers intend to focus on two areas. On the one hand, this concerns the overall quality of the building game; quality of life updates in business, combat, and services are still at the top of the to-do list. On the other hand, the game is to become even more comprehensive; among other things, with additional tutorials, decorative buildings, and a map editor. The food and population systems are also to be completely overhauled; however, details are still pending. Pioneers of Pagonia will be more expensive in early April.

Unlike previous roadmaps for Pioneers of Pagonia, the developers have not yet rolled out individual content in fixed update packages, so it remains unclear when and in what order the announcements will be implemented. However, the next roadmap update will be in the second quarter of 2025. However, the game’s price will increase beforehand, which is not unusual for early access games in the early stages. Starting April 8, the RRP will be €34.99 instead of the previous €29.99, which is expected to reflect the new content, which has been consistently available for over a year, according to Envision Entertainment.

Meanwhile, Pioneers of Pagonia is currently available for €23.99 as part of the Steam Rebate campaign for the urban development and settlement simulation genre. As expected, there will be no comparable release date, and likely a long time after the final release.

Technology Interview with Developers

In November, the editorial team of CB-Funk Envision Entertainments’ CEO, POD-Funk Envision, Volker Wertich, who has been working with Settlers for over 30 years, collaborated on the development of the indie construction game Desolate. In the interview, he revealed many details and answered fascinating questions about technology:

How did Settlers develop their own independent construction game after their creative hiatus with Ubisoft? How and why did they use their own engine? What hardware is Pioneers of Pagonia being developed on? What are the system requirements? And what speaks for or against the use of ray tracing and upscaling?
