The new generation of PCIe 5.0 SSDs is not as fast anymore, but it keeps its cool. Corsair demonstrated this with the MP700 Elite, which uses Phison’s efficient E31T controller. The same chip will probably be present in the recently introduced CS2150 by PNY.

PNY CS2150 SSD with PCIe 5.0 and 10 GB/s

PNY introduces the CS2150 series with two models. The version with 2 TB volume is supposed to read data at 10,300 MB/s and write at 8,600 MB/s. The 1 TB version is said to be only slightly slower at 10,200 MB/s and 8,300 MB/s.

PCIe 5.0 x4 is used as the interface, as x4 is said to stop at around 7,500 MB/s. But this is not the fastest SSD from PNY, since the manufacturer had already presented the CS3150 with up to 11,500 MB/s. While the latter has a heat sink with two mini fans, the CS2150 has no cooler at all.

Phison E31T almost secure

Even if the final confirmation is still missing, the CS2150 will probably impose significantly less demands on , as the use of Phison’s efficient E31T controller is almost guaranteed. This enables 10 GB/s SSDs, which only require around 6 watts under load. Models with Phison E26 controllers such as the CS3150 exceed 10 watts. However, they are also much faster and have their own DRAM cache, which is not available on the E31T.

In the public data sheet (PDF), PNY leaves all options open and does not mention the controller or the type of NAND flash. However, it is very likely that TLC-NAND will be used here, as with the Corsair MP700 Elite (test).

Prices and availability

PNY’s CS2150 SSD will be available soon. Pricing is currently only available for the US market and is $104 for 1TB and $188 for 2TB.
