Possible iPhone 17 “Air”: First models show the new ultra-thin smartphone 69 comments

The first photos and videos show models of the possible new iPhone 17 “Air,” as well as the iPhone 17, Pro, and Pro Max. The new “Air” is as thick as its buttons, which have apparently been reduced. The difference between the Pro models is clear.
As thin as the buttons and without a physical SIM card?
Sonny Dickson describes the Air on the X as “incredibly thin” and adds three photos of dummies to show all four models of the upcoming generation. In fact, the iPhone 17 Air appears as thick as the width of its buttons, which also look downwards to find space on the thin case. In return, however, no buttons or connections have been removed: the power button, camera button, and action button remain in the same location as the other models.
A USB-C connection will likely remain on board, making previous rumors of a fully connected iPhone less likely. The only difference: like the regular iPhone 17, the single-display iPhone 17 seems to be missing the SIM card tray. In the US, Apple already removed the tray with the iPhone 14 and has since speculated that an eSIM could now be implemented worldwide due to the Air’s unique dimensions.
According to Dummies, the iPhone 17 Air has fewer recesses for the loudspeaker, which could indicate a weaker speaker.

YouTuber Unox Therapy also caused a stir this week with a dummy of the iPhone 17 Air. In a video, he showed a dummy and, in addition to comparing it to other models in the alleged iPhone 17 family, also expressed concerns about durability.

Is “Bendgate” Repeating?
In particular, Unox Therapy is concerned about the possibility of involuntary (or deliberate) bending of the new ultra-thin iPhone. With the thinnest iPhone 6, the large Plus model in 2014, bendgate was triggered after Unox Therapy was able to significantly bend the smartphone in the video under the graft. Since bends can also occur unintentionally in everyday life, some users have caused irreversible damage, which may have even led to later display failures. According to current rumors, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to be even thinner, at 5.5 mm, than the iPhone 6 (6.9 mm) and the 6 Plus (7.1 mm). In the Unox therapy video, the new Air, at 5.65 mm, is also thinner than both models.
