Production stopped: AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE is EOL and leaves room for the RX 8000 147 comments
CES 2025 and the announcement of the Radeon RX 8000 series with RDNA 4 that will most likely accompany it cast their shadow. AMD is making room in the portfolio for new additions by expiring predecessors: The Radeon RX 7900 GRE (test) has now reached its end of life (EOL) and production has been discontinued.
More news for resellers
As the Dutch portal Tweakers claims to have learned, the graphics card is no longer available from distributors. Only stocks remaining at resellers will be sold. When asked, an AMD board partner told Tweakers that production had stopped.
While Tweakers only mentions one model available in stores for the Dutch market, the price comparison here shows that nine partner cards and one reference design card are still offered in German stores. The ASRock Challenger and the Asus TUF are still available in stock at many resellers. Price-wise, the RX 7900 GRE is currently going through a difficult period, because its little brother, the RX 7800 XT, has continued to drop in price and is now changing hands for almost 100 euros less. The two graphics cards are close to each other.

No internal competition with RDNA 4
The discontinuation of the RX 7900 GRE indicates that AMD no longer wants to see the RDNA 3-based card in stores anytime soon. The manufacturer certainly wants to avoid a situation like that of the RDNA 3 launch, where there were still significant stocks of the previous generation RDNA 2 aka Radeon 6000 in the warehouses of resellers and distributors.
It is expected that AMD will present the new generation of graphics cards based on the RDNA 4 architecture with the Radeon RX 8000 in early January at CES 2025 and will also bring it to market in due course. AMD will not fight with Nvidia in the high-end segment this generation; the largest card in the new range will probably be the Radeon RX 8800 XT, which in the best case scenario is a current GeForce RTX 4080 and which the Radeon RX 7900 XTX could therefore reach.
