Proton 10 Beta: More Games with Fewer Errors Playable on Linux

With Proton 10 Beta, Valve is expanding the game compatibility of its Linux translation layer. In addition to an updated base, including the use of Wine 10 monitoring, there are also numerous improvements and bug fixes, including initial work on language synthesis.

More Games Supported

For Proton 10 Beta, Valve has expanded the list of games supported on the free operating system. These were already playable in advance as part of Proton, but are now also part of the fixed Proton releases.

This includes Batman: Arkham Asylum Game of the Year Edition, Factoro, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, No Man’s Sky in VR mode, and Rising Storm 2: Vietnam. Video playback has also been improved or fixed in some titles. Renewed Software Base

As of Proton’s 10th release, the translation layer also relies on Wine 10. DXVK (GitHub) is responsible for translating DirectX 8 games to DirectX 11 games in version 2.6.1. VKD3D Proton (GitHub) v2.14.1 is available for DirectX 12. Other libraries include libvkd3d shaders in version VKD3D-1.179-G21E0895D3C3, DXVK-NVAPI V0.9.0, Wine-Mono 9.4.0, Xalia 0.4.5, and Steamworks SDK 1.62. Numerous bug fixes

Proton 10 Beta bug fixes include improved performance in Dirt Rally 2.0, fixed issues with improved GTA V, network errors in Hunt: Showdown 1896, and crashes on GPUs in games such as Stalker 2. Difficulty switching between different Proton versions when using Connect has also been addressed.

But in addition to bug fixes, there are also new features such as the use of the Steam overlay in EAC-EOS protected games. The first work on speech synthesis has also been incorporated: after manually installing Proton voice files, games like Thief can now be read aloud.

Experimental Proton with Proton 10 Beta Status

During the update, Valve also updated the experimental Proton branch. This includes all the changes from Proton 10.0-1, but also adds other games, libraries, and bug fixes. The gameplay of Star Ocean – The Divine Force is new here. In addition to the bug fixes, there is also an issue with the new Oblivion Remastered, which incorrectly displayed a warning message not to install it on an SSD.

The full changelog can be found on the Proton Wiki. The total changes from Proton 10 Beta are also listed there. Proton 10 Beta is available for use directly from the Steam client’s drop-down menu on Linux. To do so, players simply need to navigate to the “Compatibility” tab.
