QNAPS The latest professional and free NAS is impressive. The TS-H1277AFX is packed with connections for SSD storage media and with fast LAN interfaces. QNAP advertises with a whisper operation.

The whisper operation is mainly realized that the new NAS is advertised by QNAP as an all-flash solution. It is hot that no classic are used, but only SSDs.

12 inserts for up to 184 TB of memory

The TS-H1277AFX offers twelve inserts for 2.5-inch storage media. Only “2.5-inch SATA SSDs” are listed as compatible. Whether this means that a conventional 2.5-inch hard drive cannot be managed by the system remains open.

QNAP specifies the maximum amount of memory with up to 184 TB, but a 16 TB SSD would have to be installed in all twelve trees. Of extraordinarily large SSDs, there is currently only one model in the price comparison, namely the Mushkin Source HC 16TB, which currently costs 1,989 euros per piece. A rather expensive pleasure (theoretical), but technically possible.

The M.2 interfaces do not offer the all-flash NNA, but three slots, which can be used, among other things, for an M.2 expansion. One of the slots offers an x8 connection, the other two share the connection (“shared”), which means that a maximum of eight lanes can be used. However, if both slots are occupied, that leaves only four lanes per slot, which should be sufficient in most scenarios, PCIe 4.0 x4 offers 8 GB/s.

In the standard configuration, which does not provide for factory-built SSDs, there is a 32 GB DDR5-ECC-RAM bar. The NAS has a total of four RAM slots, which allows up to 196 GB of RAM (4 × 48 GB).

QNAP, as a target group of the powerful tower power, provides for low-latency 4K / 8K video processing, visual effects (VFX) workflows or working together in the team of large amounts of data.

Driven by AMD Ryzen 7 9000

The heart of the system is an AMD 7 9000 with 8 cores and 16 threads that are not made by QNAP, which hormone up to 5.5 GHz. The cores and clock suggest that a ryzen 7 9700x is installed, which should also have sufficient performance for virtualization tasks in the future and its energy efficiency has been documented in a detailed test.

The efficiency of the Ryzen-CPU should contribute to the fact that the all-flash-nah from QNAP is advertised as extremely quiet in the business than in idle. There are 19 DBA at idle, in normal operation it should be 32 dBA. In an office environment this should be quiet enough so as not to attract more attention, especially since the typical sound that HDDs provide when accessing data is not completely necessary due to the SSDs.

A look at the network connectivity reveals two RJ45 LAN ports that provide up to 10 Gbit / s per port and, as usual, the downward compatible is 5 Gbit / s, 2.5 Gbit / s and 1 Gbit / s. LAN speed can be upgraded up to 25Gbps via the mentioned PCIe expansion slots.

In QNAP’s own tests, which take place under laboratory conditions and therefore benefit mainly from caution, the NAS achieves a remarkable 17,348 MB / s when reading sequentially and over 12,092 MB / s when writing. Twelve SSDs were used for the test in a RAID5 network. In addition, the parallel access values were achieved. A single network connection could not cope with these values, especially since there is no end device that can process such large amounts of data in such a short time. Nevertheless, the values show impressively what data throughputs are theoretically possible when the hardware is running even far from the infrastructure in a data center. As usual with QNAP, the NAS can be supplemented with expansion boxes and cards. QUTS Hero is used as the operating system, while QTS is otherwise common in the private environment. The operating system tailored for business models advertises with “extraordinary” SMB transmission performance and additional adjustments in the area of data security, which are specifically aimed at business customers. In addition to the NAS, the scope of delivery only includes standard accessories such as instructions, power cords and network cables as well as the screws required for assembling the SSDs.

Price and availability

The QNAP TS-H1277Axu has not yet made the price comparison, but the online retailer PROSHOP lists the NAS as order goods with 4 to 6 days delivery for just over 5,000 euros.

From your own home there is plenty of competition, such as the QNAP TS-H1277AXU for assembly in a server cabinet, also with twelve shafts that can also absorb 3.5-inch hard drives. The RAM can be expanded in the same way and a Ryzen 5 7600 is used as a processor.
