E-book readers have set themselves the task of imitating reading a book as much as possible. In the future, some of these devices will even be able to open like a book, as the trend towards foldable screens doesn’t stop there either. One example is the Readmoo Moinink V, which is the first reader of its kind.
The foldable Readmoo Moinink V
The Moinink V, presented at this year’s Touch Taiwan, has an 8-inch display that, according to the manufacturer, offers a pixel density of 300 ppi, which would be slightly higher than the 1,440 × 1,872 pixels found in current e-book readers. The panel comes from the electronic ink specialist E-Ink and relies on Gallery 3 technology, which means that approximately 50,000 different colors can be displayed. The display, along with the remaining technology not described in detail, is housed in a magnesium-aluminum alloy housing, reducing the reader’s total weight to just 255 grams.

Nine years in the making
As Johnson Lee, CEO of E-ink, explains in a LinkedIn post, the foundation for a flexible electronic binding panel was laid 19 years ago. At that time, the Dutch company Polymer Vision presented the first functional implementations of a foldable e-paper display. However, market success failed to materialize, and the company was shut down in December of that year. According to Lee, the development of the now-presented panel took a total of nine years.
Other manufacturers will follow.
So far, Readmoo has not provided any information on a possible price or sales start for the Mooink V. It remains to be seen whether the device will find its way into German retail stores. Nevertheless, the model shows what innovations can also be expected from other well-known e-book reader manufacturers in that country.
