ReMarkable Paper Pro in the test: better color representation but functional weaknesses

ReMarkable’s Paper Pro impressed in the test with good finish, excellent color reproduction and precise pen input, but fell short of expectations in many areas. This puts the asking price in a different light; the device does not offer enough digital notepad.

Design, manufacturing and price

Long before well-known e-reader makers like and PocketBook, ReMarkable had made its devices considerably larger and equipped them with pen input. Together with Sony, the company shaped the e-note segment, intended to combine the best features of e-readers and tablets. Today, the Norwegian manufacturer’s models are no longer an insider secret, but are increasingly becoming leaders in the sector. The ReMarkable Paper Pro also had to meet this requirement during the test.

The high-quality appearance that ReMarkable is striving for with its new Paper Pro is clear at first glance from the packaging, which is more reminiscent of a large, blank drawing book and which some buyers would therefore prefer to leave closed. But whoever finally manages to break the seal will be rewarded with high-quality technology. Compared to the previous model, ReMarkable 2, the Paper Pro has also become significantly larger with dimensions of 196.5 × 274 mm. The aluminum body surrounding the E-Note may give some users a cool feeling in the fingers, but it also ensures an attractive appearance that visibly stands out from the competition. However, this comes at a price; at 650 euros, the Paper Pro forces interested buyers to dig deep into their own wallet. What buyers get for this price is a high-quality finish with small gaps, so that the housing and display blend in almost seamlessly, giving the device a particularly valuable appearance. Despite its low thickness of only 5.1 mm, the Paper Pro offers great stability and remains easy to hold. Only the uneven edges of the display, especially the thicker area below the display, are visible – but this is unavoidable because the required technology has to be housed somewhere. The four nubs on the back are particularly noticeable, as they clearly indicate that the test candidate is mainly used as a digital notepad on the table. The new user must first get used to them when reading. Despite its weight of 525 thanks to the high-quality materials, the Paper Pro sits well in the hand and can be held comfortably even for long periods of time. However, the smooth back poses the risk that the device will quickly slip out of your hand if you are careless.
The frame of the Paper Pro also has a rather atypical design: its ribs are supposed to be reminiscent of a stack of paper, which is intended to further emphasize the special orientation of the device. The only physical control element is the power button on the upper left edge; it is firmly seated and has a good pressure point. The USB port is located on the lower edge, but is not in the middle, but also positioned on the left.

The ability to expand the internal memory using SD cards has been omitted, as has water protection. This shows that the Paper Pro is clearly focused on its use as an electronic note. Marker pen included

The scope of delivery of the test candidate includes, among other things, the new marker pen or, for an additional 50 euros, the Plus version with an eraser function at the top. Also included is a USB cable, thin enough to ensure that the slim device does not rest on the plug during charging, thus damaging the port. The cable also has USB-C plugs on both sides and the user must provide an adapter to a USB-A port so that the E-Note can also be connected to older computers. A wireless charging function is not supported.
