Almost 20 years ago, Bethesda released the fourth installment of The Elder Scrolls role-playing game series, Oblivion. Now, the classic shines in new splendor: Oblivion Remastered is now available with modern graphics from the Unreal Engine 5. How does the community feel about a new edition based on computers?

Are you (still) playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion? Does Oblivion get a second life for you with the remaster, and (when) did you last play the original? Your favorite Elder Scrolls fans and Bethesda’s first RPG participation are eagerly awaited. The final ten questions on Sunday are featured in the overview of motivation and data usage.

Oblivion Gets a Second Life

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, one of the most famous and popular role-playing games, was released in March 2006 and is now over 19 years old. Surprisingly, and previously unannounced, an official and elaborate revision, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, was released on Tuesday. As expected, the worlds are graphically situated between the original and the UNALAL ENGINE 5 developed for a new edition.

On Steam, the new Oblivion Edition has already received over 20,000 reviews in just a few days, with a “very positive” rating, with an 82% approval rating. Apparently, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has become one of the biggest game releases in April 2025. Do you also intend to revisit Bethesda’s role-playing game?

How do you feel about the remaster, and (when) did you play the original?

Bethesda chose the term “remastered” for the new edition. Graphically, the term “remake” may also come to mind. However, it was nothing more than a fine-tuning. For the most part, you’re playing the 2006 game 1:1. Technically, it’s definitely a remake. Because even though the original GameBryo engine is the backbone of the entire game, the graphics are taken over by the Unreal Engine 5, more precisely version UE5.3.2.2.0. The developers at Virtuoso and Bethesda are using all the guns the engine offers: Nanite, Lumen, Virtual Shadow Maps—everything is used.

However, there’s one catch: even though the developers want to revamp the animations, they all come from the original and abandon them massively. The figures move very erratically, sometimes spin in place, and like to get stuck somewhere. It’s immediately noticeable here that this is still the original game under the hood. The same goes for the sometimes constant loading times when entering buildings and sometimes only other rooms. With the Unreal Engine 5, of course, this is no longer necessary for the original engine to regulate everything in the background, but still. Are you going far enough for this remastered concept? Or are you disappointed? Speaking of the original: have you actually played this? And if so, when was it?

Your favorite older version and your first Bethesda RPG?

A popular argument among long-time gamers is whether The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion or The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the better game. How does the community continue to debate the PC game? Which part of Bethesda’s famous role-playing series is your favorite?

Of course, The Elder Scrolls isn’t Bethesda’s only major RPG brand. Along with Fallout and, since 2023, Starfield, the developer and publisher has two other major brands in its portfolio. Which game from these three universes was your first Bethesda role-playing game?

After looking back, a look to the future follows. It’s no secret that Bethesda has been working on Skyrim’s successor, The Elder Scrolls VI, for a long time, and the RPG has been in active production for about a year and a half.
