ROG GEFORCE RTX 5090 ASTRAL IN THE TEST: The 3 kg custom design with 4 fans

In the GEFORCE RTX 5090 Founders Edition test, the new dual-flow cooler was convincing given the 2-slot, 2-fan format, but left room for custom designs to run quieter (and cooler) . With the Asus Rog Geforce RTX 5090 Astral, a 4-FAN design with 3.8 slots takes part in the duel in today’s test.

GeForce RTX 5090: Asus Rog Astral Oder Nvidia “Fe”?

With the GeForce RTX 5000 series, ASUS launches a new flagship graphics card line: Rog Astral, “The Final Frontier”. It still sits above the ROG Strix series, for which there are currently no RTX 5000 announcements. The largest model in the new series for now is the ASUS ROG GEFORCE RTX 5090 ASTRAL (OC) . The test clarifies what the graphics card does compared to the Nvidia Founders Edition.

Inspired by the vastness and beauty of the Cosmos, the new Rog Astral family demonstrates the relentless commitment to exploring and defining new frontiers. With this in mind, the ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5090 is ROG’s first quad-fan graphics card, coupled with a patented vapor chamber, increased heat dissipation fin density, phase-change GPU thermal pad, to high standard clock speeds, improved power supply and more.

For the first time at Asus with a fourth fan

The “greatest” should be taken literally from the start. The Asus Rog Geforce RTX 5090 Astral (OC) is a real monster: 3.8 slots wide, almost 35.5 centimeters long and 15 cm deep are an announcement. The same goes for the weight of 2,871 grams.

The fan configuration is also impressive: four units with a diameter of approx. 105 mm are installed. Three classically on the side of the GPU, one on the back – it sucks the air which the rear fan blows back into the cooler from below from top to top. Rog Astral’s PCB is classic, but significantly shorter than the graphics card, so the rear fans have a clear path through the slats.

The approach is new and seems clever, but it will turn out to be the Achilles heel of the Asus Rog Astral in the test, because the fourth fan is the only one that draws attention to itself with unpleasant noise of the fan. Learn more on page 2.

In addition to the OC Edition tested here, there is also a non-OC version. As a rule, the two series only differ in the maximum clock speed of the GPU, which has no decisive influence on performance and other parameters. Most of the time, only the OC Edition is available in this country.

The ASUS ROG GEFORCE RTX 5090 ASTRAL comes to customers in the classic packaging, in which buyers will find not only the massive graphics card but also a small case with extras.

In addition to the 4 × 8 pin to 12V 2 × 6 adapter, which has shorter cables than the Fe adapter, the box also contains a small “GPU holder” (height variable), a ruler, a magnetic sticker and a Velcro strap – and a plastic model of the ROG Astral in miniature format.

The graphics card itself has a 12V 2 × 6 connector, which is classically positioned on the PCB. The PCB is shorter than the graphics card, which allows the sandwich of the two rear fans to work together.

The processing and choice of materials for the graphics card are at an extremely high level. Only the fans and the RGB trim strip on the side are made of plastic, while the rest of the cooler and its cover are made of (sometimes very solid) metal. Astral definitely surpasses the well-known series in this respect.

Two bios configurations to choose from

The custom design features a BIOS DIP switch that allows buyers to choose between a “Performance” or “Silent” BIOS. The performance BIOS is Active Ex Works. The two variants differ only in the GPU target temperature and thus the fan control or fan speed.

Quiet Performance TDP (FE) 600 watt (575 watt) Power consumption (FE) * 632 watt (578 watts) Boost clock (FE) 2580 MHz (2407) Memory clock (FE) 28 Gbps (28 Gbps) Gbit/Gbit/Gbit/Gbps) (FE) * 1900 rpm (1700 rpm) 1,900 rpm (1700 rpm) *measured after 30 minutes of UHD charging (TDP exhausted)

When it comes to connections, ASUS does not stick to the standard set by NVIDIA, but uses DisplayPort 2.1 three times and HDMI 2.1 twice.

In addition to the two BIOS profiles, additional profiles can be enabled using the ASUS GPU III GPU TOL. The silent profile, for example, reduces the TDP to 540 watts (-10%) and the clock speed to 20 MHz. Additionally, the tool shows if there are any connection issues on the 12V 2×6 port.
