AMD sends “new” notebook with the best-known technical properties of the predecessors under the name Ryzen 8000HX Alias Dragon Range Refresh. The CPUs continue to consist of a 4 CPU and RDNA-2 graphics unit, with one of the CPUs coming with higher clock rates.

New CPUs were already suspected in January

As already assumed in January, when the new Fire HX (3D) line was officially presented by AMD, but at the same time there were rumors in Asia, that there could also be a Dragon Range refresh, the “new” CPU models listen to the names Ryzen 9 8945HX, Ryzen 7 8840hx and Ryzen 7 8745HX. The new, barely modified edition follows the Ryzen 9 7945Hx, Ryzen 9 7940Hx, Ryzen 7 7840HX and Ryzen 7 7745HX presented in spring 2023.

Single processor with more turbo clock

AMD probably decided not to have a big idea at scale due to the minor changes. Technically the CPUs are almost identical to the Dragon line predecessors, AMD has only made a minimal change on top of a Zen 4 processor, as shown in the following table. So the names are new, only the Ryzen 9 8940Hx more turbo clock compared to the Ryzen 9 7940Hx 100 MHz. AMD has completely taken over all other specifications.

For cheaper premium notebooks with DGPU

The new processors for “premium notebooks” are designed, as AMD describes. Specifically, due to the rather small 610m (rDNA 2), you should be aimed at 2 CUS for notebooks with a discrete graphics card, which can be offered more cheaply than the new Fire Range HX and Fire Range HX3D, which already combine them with the same old ZEN-5 CPUS of 4-nm production.
