Seagate and Western Digital: revenues with hard drives have increased significantly

Hard disk drives (HDD), which are often already dead, experience a noticeable increase. Inspired by the growing needs for memory in data centers, leading manufacturers Seagate and Western Digital once again recorded a significant increase in sales.

At Seagate, sales with hard drives increased by 57% in the second of the current fiscal year 2025 compared to the same period of the previous year. That means about $2.169 billion. While sales only increased by 12% with around 13 million units, the average selling price (ASP) increased to $167 and thus by 40% in total.

Hard drive sales in the 2nd Fiscal Quarter 2025 (increase from the previous year) Seagate Western Digital hard drive sales $2.169 billion (+57%) $2.409 billion (+76%) hard drive sales in the 13 million disk (+12%) 13.5 million (+25%) HDD-ASP 167 USD (+40%) 172 USD (+41%)

This is mainly due to the increase in storage capacities, as on average it was 11.6 TB per drive, while it was still 8.2 TB a year earlier. About 87% of sales made discs in the “mass capacity” class.

The bottom line is that Seagate was able to increase its profits again thanks to good sales of hard drives, which amounts to $433 million.

At Western Digital, hard drive sales have gone a little further. Sales increased 25% to 13.5 million units. With the average price increased to $172, sales increased to $2.409 billion and thus 76%. According to the , only about 69% of hard drives sold were in the “cloud” segment. The rest is entered partly through models for “customer” and “consumer”.

In combination with the , Western Digital was able to increase its total revenue to $4.285 billion and profits to $594 million.

HDD Upswing only at first?

The IEEE Professional Association’s predictions for the massive increase in disk sales of the so-called disc last October do not seem as unlikely due to the current development. However, much depends on whether HDD manufacturers can meet their roadmaps with even greater capacities and further lower prices per TB and how SSD competition will continue to approach HDDs on this score. .

In terms of storage capacity, Seagate recently presented and announced models of a 36 TB hard drive with HAMR and SMR technology.
