Konami’s grand remake of the horror classic Silent Hill 2 is now also available from Epic Games and GoG. In both stores, the publisher is currently offering a discount on the new edition, ensuring players get exactly what they expected and wanted.
So the remake is great.
Silent Hill 2 puts players in the shoes of a husband searching for his wife in a gloomy small town and is eventually caught up there. Despite the dubbed season, the developers manage to capture the fascination of the original, the balance being good six months after its first release.
The new edition plays like the classic in terms of world design, soundtrack, and enemies with uncertainties, leaving players in the dark—and thus creating a more natural horror experience than with jump scares alone. The title also scores with an adult take on serious themes that match the oppressive atmosphere. This makes the mix of puzzles and combat—with individually selectable difficulty levels—as captivating as the original release in 2003. In short, the game is well-received and delivers.
Technically at its limit
Technically, the PC benchmark test attested to decent graphics, but also frame rate issues. The conclusion suggests that hardware ray tracing is less necessary, but the option in this title is hardly worth the performance penalty. The rate issue prevented a clear recommendation.
A similar picture emerged in Linux benchmarks: the frame rate is “just over ten percent” behind the Windows version and therefore “still within the frame.” The horror remake also runs smoothly on Steam, but only with low graphics settings and visible quality compromises. The conclusion here: “The graphics suffer, but they work.”
New Platforms
Meanwhile, the title can no longer be sold exclusively via Steam. It is available in the Epic Games Store and DRM-free via GOG. There, it is currently offered until May 15th for around 48 euros instead of 70. On the other hand, the regular price is still required on Steam.
