Migration of Slide Powers: The New Plus Series NAS Requires Synology Drives 71 comments
Synology will also rely on its own Synology storage media in the Plus series this year, as the manufacturer announced today. The Plus series models, which will be released in 2025, are only compatible with Synology’s own hard drives and always with Synology-certified hard drives from third-party manufacturers.
Possible Migration Loop
Which certified drives will be? It’s still open. But only with these and your own Synology drives is the full range of functionality and support guaranteed. Nothing changes for the Plus models released until 2024 (except the XS Plus and Rack models). In addition, migrating hard drives from existing Synology NASes to a new Plus model will continue to be possible without restrictions. Here, Synology potentially offers a future loophole by initially initiating drives in an older NAS, then using them in a new 2025 NAS, and potentially an enterprise with pre-configured drives for migration to stores.
Restrictions without Synology drives
The use of compatible, unblocked hard drives will be subject to certain restrictions in the future, such as pool creation and support for issues and disruptions due to the use of incompatible storage media, Synology explains. Volume-wide deduplication, lifetime scans, and automatic hard drive firmware updates will only be available for Synology hard drives in the future.
Synology is promoting the decision as a logical step “following the success of the high-performance series,” and “users benefit from higher performance, increased reliability, and more efficient support,” the company said. By expanding the requirement for a Synology drive, the company wanted to enable home users and small businesses to achieve the highest level of security, performance, and efficiency, Synology explains.
Synology Responds to Forum Questions
Questions about the new restriction and compatibility of the 2025+ series will be answered by Synology itself directly in the forum thread of this post.
