Compulsion Games’ latest game, South of Midnight, recently appeared. Xbox Game Studios also released the game on Steam. After a week, over 1,000 reviews have been collected for the game. Many critics are positive about the new action title, awarding it a “very positive” rating.
New Action Adventure with a Folklore Focus
South of Midnight is a new third-person action adventure developed by Compulsion Games, the Canadian makers of Contrast and We Happy, and published by Xbox Game Studios.
Hazelnut Magic
After a disastrous hurricane hits Hazel Himmatstadt’s home and her mother disappears, the young woman finds herself in a dark world of memories. There, Hazel is to become a weaving engine: a magician who can heal bones as well as the mind. With this power, he is to literally correct Prospero’s world with weaving in order to be able to face and then defeat dangerous creatures. Much in the world corresponds to folk tales from the southern states of the United States, like some of the creatures that live there. With her newfound skills, Hazel searches for her mother and must uncover her own family’s past.
Weaving is an ancient power that Hazel uses to restore creatures to their original form and uncover the trauma that afflicts spirits and monsters. Prospero has various regions that Hazel and many of its residents wish to explore. The dilapidated Prospero and its inhabitants bear witness to a deep history.
South of Midnight Auf Steam
One week after its release, players had written 1,000 reviews on Steam. 93% of them recommended it. In particular, the narrative, art style, soundtrack, and graphics, which contribute to the game’s atmosphere, were generally praised.
South of Midnight also uses stop-motion, but receives divided opinions. However, it’s becoming clear that it’s a matter of taste, and it’s kindly left to the player to decide whether to keep the option enabled in the settings or disable it.
These days, however, there are very few games without criticism, and critics also see room for improvement for South of Midnight. The most discussed criticism of the title is the gameplay—specifically, the combat, which is perceived as repetitive or even boring. Even the game’s recommendations have cited this as a negative point, but also point out that the positive aspects such as the story and atmosphere predominate, the repetitive gameplay, and that South of Midnight isn’t a AAA title anyway.
