Steam user record: 40 million is cracked 34 comments

On Sunday, the moment had come: for the first time, the 40 million mark was exceeded by logged in Steam users. Among other things, the hype around Monster Hunter Wilds should have led. However, not even a third of the user was in a game.
Steam’s own statistics report a new record of 40,263,562 logged in users for Sunday afternoon March 2, 2025. Even a little more, the 40,270,997 users that SteamDB determined for the same period fails. The magic limit of 40 million “concurrent users” has finally been cracked, while it was only missed last weekends.
SteamDB records illustrate the rapid promotion of user numbers on Steam. But not all players were also in a game at the same time. On the record day, it was only about 32% with almost 12.8 million. The curve of users playing at the same time is far from increasing so sharply.
Nevertheless, the 12,812,379 simultaneous players also mean a new record.
Monster Hunter Wilds binds many players
Capcom‘s cooperative action game Monster Hunter Wilds, which was released on Steam on February 28, is likely to have at least a relatively high proportion of the new user record. In the shortest possible time, it has not only become a top seller, but also one of the most played games on Steam right now.
However, more than 1.3 million players have already played the title on the release day. The previous maximum of 1,384,608 players was reached on March 1, only slightly fewer were then recorded on Sunday.

At the moment, Monster Hunter Wilds is number two among the most played games on Steam despite the sharp reviews. Valve‘s long-running Counter-Strike 2 can still outbid with 1.5 million players. A different game continues to hold the record for the all-time peak of concurrent players: PUBG: Battlegrounds reached over 3.2 million players seven years ago.
