Study: More gamers in Germany than ever before

“More Germans than ever before are playing ,” according to a recent study based on representative surveys. A total of 37.5 million Germans are considered gamers. The proportion of women is 48%. There has been an increase in the number of older people.

The German Games Industry Association reports statistics. The figures are based on “surveys by YouGov Shopper, Nielsen IQ, and Data.ai (a sensor tower company).” This includes a “current survey of 25,000 consumers representative of the German population,” the press release . “Gaming refers to video games, including PC and console games, and mobile games. More Germans than ever

According to the study, the total number of gamers in Germany has risen to 37.5 million, which is more than ever. However, the growth in recent years hasn’t exactly been steep, as from 2020 to the present, the number of gamers has only increased by 9%. In 2024, there was also a break in growth in sales; more on this below.

Almost equal gender split

The fact that primarily men play can no longer be said that way, as around 48%, and therefore almost half, of gamers are women.

The average age continues to rise

The average age increased from 38.2 years the previous year to 39.5 years. This is not only because many players remain loyal to recreational games, but also because more older people find it more likely. The number of players over 60 increased from 6.4 to 7.7 million. Calculated with the total number of 37.5 million players, the 60+ age group would now represent approximately 20.5%. This would be roughly the same size as the proportion of underage players, as 79% of players would be over 18, leaving 21% under 18. Whether with 17 or 70 games, people of all ages are inspired, and the proportion of older players is particularly increasing.

Sales have declined slightly in 2024

The aforementioned growth break concerns sales. According to the report “Last year, €9.4 billion was invested” in Germany with games, gaming hardware, and online gaming services, this was 6% lower than in 2023. Purchases of titles for PC, console, and smartphone fell by a total of 17% to €921 million. The euros caused a headwind.
