Successor to the 990 Pro?: Samsung wants to offer faster PCIe 5.0-SSD soon 24 comments
Only now Samsung sees the age of PCIe 5.0 SSDs and wants to present a “powerful product” for the PC area in the coming months. This suggests a successor to the Samsung 990 Pro.
Although the competition has had suitable products on the market for a long time, Samsung does not have a real PCIE-5.0 SSD for end customers. The Samsung 990 EVO (test) and Samsung 990 EVO Plus (test) supported PCIe 5.0, but only as an alternate mode with two lanes (PCIe 5.0 x2) and thus for half of the PCIe 5.0 x4 interface installed in the main tables.
Samsung announces Fast PCIe 5.0 SSD
Now it looks like there will soon be a Samsung SSD with a full PCIe 3.0 connection. Samsung writes the following in a press release titled with “AT New Heights”, in which the storage trends of 2025 are to be shown:
Recent years have been marked by PCIe Gen 4.0. No other SSD interface has been used more often. Now the age of PCIe Gen 5.0 begins. More and more end devices rely on the latest generation interface, simply because the high-speed connection enables further application fields in the AI area and provides reliable support for AI PCs. Samsung will advance this development with a powerful product in the coming months.

This means that a powerful PCIe 5.0 SSD from Samsung can be expected in the coming months. However, there are no details about this, so it can only be assumed for now.
Samsung has already introduced faster SSDs for OEM PCs
Samsung already has a “plan” for such an SSD in the program, because last fall the manufacturer presented a fast OEM model with PCIE 5.0. The Samsung PM9E1 uses PCIe 5.0 x4 in M.2 format for high throughput rates of 14.5 GB/s when reading and 13 GB/s when writing.
More efficient and faster thanks to the 5nm controller
According to Samsung, a separate controller is used, which is manufactured in a 5nm process. This should work particularly efficiently. Samsung speaks of 50% improved energy efficiency compared to the predecessor PM9A1A, which reaches a maximum of 7,000 MB / s.
If the maximum transfer rate is used for the efficiency statement, the controller would be 100% more efficient than the old one at 14,500 MB/s with the same consumption. But it’s only 50%. Controller consumption should also have increased with the step on PCIe 5.0 at Samsung. Details on consumption are still missing.
Up to 4TB per SSD available
The NAND Flash memory is Samsung’s 8th generation TLC-3D-NAND in V-NAND (V8). The series will be available with 512 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB or 4 TB Storage volume.
A similar assembly would then be conceivable for a new high-end SSD for the end customer (retail) market.
Is the Samsung 9100 now?
There’s plenty of indication that Samsung’s latest announcement is a successor to the Samsung 990 Pro (review), which is still the manufacturer’s final flagship.
Last summer, Samsung protected the “9100 Pro” brand name. At the same time, the brand “990 Evo Plus” was also registered, which is now available as a product and has already passed the computer basic test park in November.
A Samsung 9100 Pro with PCIe 5.0 X4 and similar components as well as comparable performance values of the OEM-SSD PM9E1 can be expected from the editorial team.
