Synology DS225+: The Enthusiasts’ NAS Gets a LAN Upgrade
Synology DS225+: The Enthusiasts’ NAS Gets a LAN Upgrade
With the Synology DS225+, the NAS model series, which is very popular among PC users, gets a successor today. It shares its hardware with the DS425+, also newly unveiled today at Computex 2025. It offers four hard drive increments, while a maximum of two hard drives can be used in the DS225+.
Unchanged Processor and Memory
For the processor, Synology uses the same model as the DS224+ (reviewed), the Intel Celeron J4125, for the DS225+. It comes from the Gemini-Lake Refresh series, which was released in late 2019. The Celeron J4125 offers four processor cores in a total of four threads. The base clock is 2.0 GHz, but in turbo mode, the processors can reach up to 2.7 GHz. The TDP is 10 watts and the cache is 4 MB. Like the DS524+ and the previous NAS, the J4125 has integrated Intel UHD Graphics 600, allowing it to transcode videos faster.
Synology also makes no adjustments when it comes to memory. This comes with only 2 GB from the factory, offers no error correction (ECC), and is soldered to the board. However, another GDR4-SODIMM module, officially with 4 GB, can be used on the front of the NAS. With the DS725+, Synology also introduced a new version of its fastest 2-bay NAS with AMD Ryzen today.

2.5 Gigabit LAN
New is the LAN connection with 2.5 gigabits per second, which Synology now uses for all new Plus series NAS systems. Also with the DS225+ one of the two network connections is faster than with the DS224+. This supposedly small change in relation to hardware will guarantee much faster data transmissions, provided that the network supports the higher speed. The synology itself speaks of 280/210 Mb/s when reading or writing.
M.2 still not for DS225 +
The rest of the equipment remains unchanged from the predecessor. The DS225+ also doesn’t have any M.2 slots on the bottom to use M.2-SSD as a cache or volume. If you want to use SSDS in the DS225 +, only the path via 2.5 inch SATA-SSD on both drive shots remains. A USB 3.0 connection for external storage media is installed on the front and back. Nothing has changed with the new model on the external 60 watt power supply and cooling via a single 92mm fan.

Reports circulating currently, that the DS225 + 4GB RAM and M.2 attribute, are incorrect.
Only hard drives certified in the Plus series
As with other 25S Plus series NAS, only synologies can be used by other manufacturers of the DS225+. However, a loophole is migration for the owner of a synology-NAS. Drives from an old Synology NAS can be moved to the new DS225+ and then used further. A change from DS220 + (test) to DS225 + is therefore possible, for example. When and which hard drives are certified by third-party vendors is not yet known.
Pricing and availability
Synology has not yet announced the price and availability of the DS225+ for Germany. Its predecessor, the DS224+, was released in August 2023 for around €356 (RRP).
