Synology DS425+: The new 2.5 GBE NAS uses an Intel CPU 47 comments

For Computex 2025, Synology officially launched another Plus series NAS system with the DS425+ for four hard drives, following the debut of the DS925+ a few weeks ago. The DS425+ also offers 2.5 GBE, but relies on Intel instead of AMD and differs in detail.
Celeron CPU and only 2 GB of non-ECC RAM
The DS425+ is based on the DS925+’s chassis and therefore also measures 166 × 199 × 223 mm. Inside, however, there’s no AMD Ryzen V1500B, but Synology continues to use an Intel Celeron J4125 as the main processor, as with the DS423+. It offers four cores and clocks of 2.0 GHz in the base and up to 2.7 GHz in the turbo. It’s a positive for PLEX users that transcoding is still supported with the integrated Intel UHD Graphics 600. Synology’s AMD NAS without a GPU fares worse here.
Synology continues to use 2 GB of DDR4 non-ECC RAM on the side, while the DS925+ uses 4 GB ECC SoDimm. The DS425+’s RAM can also be upgraded with an additional 4 GB SoDimm module. Thus, the two NASes are clearly differentiated from each other. In common with the faster model, the DS425+ has two M.2 slots for 2280 SSDs.

2.5 Gigabit Ethernet also available for the DS425+
The DS425+ also has a LAN connection with 2.5 gigabits per second. Instead of the two connections of the DS925+, this model only has a faster LAN connection. The second LAN connection of the DS425+ continues to operate at 1 Gbps.
In addition, the DS425+ offers two USB A ports that comply with USB 3.2 GEN 1. The USB-C port for an expansion unit is therefore also reserved for the DS925+.

An external 90-watt power supply provides power. Typical power consumption should be 28.25 watts when the NAS is accessible. When the drives are in standby mode, Synology specifies 6.10 watts as power consumption. The system and drives are cooled by two 92 mm fans at the rear. Synology specifies a volume of 21.6 decibels. The NAS weighs 2.18 kg without a drive.
Only certified hard drives can be used.
As with the DS925+ and generally, all models in the 25-seater plus series must also use certified DS425+ hard drives. So far, these are exclusively Synology hard drives. It remains to be seen if and when other manufacturers have their drives certified. However, one way out is migrating an older Synology NAS, as existing hard drives from older Synology NASes can also be migrated to the DS425+ and then continued to be used. Pricing and availability
Synology has not yet announced the price and availability of the DS425+ for Germany. The recommended retail price for the Synology DS423+ was €546.20 at launch.
