Team Group presents a flagship among external SSDs with the Expert P32. It is not exactly compact, but it offers a lot of storage space of 8 TB or even 16 TB. In addition, data should be transferred very quickly with a maximum speed of 1,800 MB/s. The target group of creative professionals should benefit from this in particular.

Large aluminum housing promotes heat dissipation

The aluminum housing of the Expert P32 measures 110 × 65 × 26 mm (L × W × H). In total, the portable data carrier weighs 261 grams. This is a very high weight for an external SSD, but this is probably also due to the concept. Because the housing serves as a heat conductor thanks to its large surface area. A graphene pad supports the heat dissipation of the integrated SSD.

At its peak 1,800 MB/s with 16 TB

Team Group states that the 16 TB Expert P32 has 1,800 MB/s for sequential reads and writes. The 8 TB model is said to work a little slower, at 1,700 MB/s. This speed is made possible via USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, which the host system must support accordingly. Otherwise, it will switch to a slower USB standard. The connection is made using the supplied USB-C cable, which is 1 meter long. Operation on Thunderbolt ports with a USB-C socket is also possible.

Two cables are required

However, an additional cable is required, which further limits portability. The USB port is not sufficient to power the SSD sufficiently. A 1.2 meter long power cable is therefore still required.

In order for the mass storage to work ex works with as many systems based on , macOS or as possible, the data carrier is formatted in the exFAT file system.

Prices and availability

According to Team Group, the SSD Expert P32 is expected to be available during the fourth quarter of 2024. However, the price of the SSD has not yet been mentioned.

At least similar performance is also available in a much more compact form, for example in the form of the Lexar SL500 or the Kingston XS2000. However, slim SSDs are only available with a maximum storage volume of 4TB.
