Temperatures too high?: Teracle examines T450 SSD failures

Customer complaints regarding sudden failures of their Teracle T450 SSD have increased recently. The confirms the unexpected complaint rates and suspects excessive temperatures as the cause. The incidents need to be examined more closely. Until then, the use of thermal pads is urgently recommended.

Faulty T450 messages increase

Readers informed the editorial team of a possible technical issue testing the Teracle T450 SSD. Various complaints that have recently increased at the online retailer Mindfactory join the three reports about an unusual SSD in the Computer Core Forum.

The tenor is often the same: after a few months, often around a year, the T450 SSD suddenly failed. The tools reported bad sectors and partly write protection was active, so the data could only be read. In the worst case, however, there was a complete failure, according to reports.

The editorial team’s T450 still works

The publishers then checked the test model which was still available and contacted Teracle. The T450 model, which is rarely used after testing, still works perfectly, but also only has 74 hours of operation on the bump. Due to the testing procedure, a relatively large amount of data was written in this short time.

This is what Teracle says about chess

Teracle responded quickly with a detailed response. According to this, the MindFactory incidents are known. Of the SSDs sold at this dealership, 59 have been claimed as defective, which corresponds to a response rate greater than about 2%.

Temperatures too high?

After reviewing the RMA cases, Teracle found that the included “thermo-pads” were not applied with three exceptions. Therefore, the manufacturer misses faults during SSD overheating and recommends assembling closed thermal pads. In the meantime, the manual has been adjusted so that the need for thermal pads is more clearly indicated.

Faulty SSDs should be analyzed closely

The manufacturer still wants to determine whether high temperatures are really the cause of the defects. Objects that complain would be “parsed exactly”. As soon as there is more information, Teracle would like to inform the editorial team. Teracle points out that the complaint rate without cases due to lack of “thermo-pad” would be very low at 0.01%.

Note from the editorial team

Modern SSDs usually have overheating protection, at least for the controller. This ensures that power is throttled or the SSD is turned off when the temperature is too high. In the worst case, the latter can temporarily mean the of data stored in the cache, but does not render the SSD unusable.

Teracle said that the innogrit controller used has overheat protection by reducing performance at too high a temperature (thermal throttling). However, temperatures that are too high could permanently affect the lifespan of the SSD.
