The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion: Remake Release Imminent
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is getting a remake. The announcement and release are apparently imminent. Meanwhile, following increasingly clear indications, numerous screenshots of the project have surfaced, which are expected to appear in-game next week.
According to Eurogamer, Microsoft plans to release the remake next week as a “shadow drop.” The publisher had already used this strategy at Hi-Fi Rush. A game is thrown onto the market without warning to maximize attention by using the surprise effect. This is particularly useful for niche titles and brands that currently receive little attention. The release for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S is planned for both Game Pass and the Xbox Series S platforms. The first rumors of a remake surfaced through internal Microsoft documents as early as 2020, and in 2023, a former developer at the studio, likely assigned to the game, with Virtuoso on his resume, was working on an “Unreal Engine 5 remake.” This remake includes revised systems for sneaking, stamina, blocking, and archery.

The new material then leaked via the Virtuoso website. There were many images that can no longer be found—now the entire studio website is offline—but were secured on Reddit and Imgur.
There are also direct comparisons between identical scenes from the original and the remake. They show a significant leap in graphical quality: the world is considerably more detailed, contains more vegetation, a better presentation of light and shadow, a newly rendered monster, and increased visibility.
The fact that Oblivion is being re-released is explained by its position in the development of the old ones. In many ways, it is similar to Skyrim, for example in the scaling of enemies relative to the player, while its predecessor, Morrowind, was even more classic, but also more expansive—and sometimes relied on different directions. Modernization is much more demanding here, as it must always build a bridge between fans and newcomers, as well as between the remembered quality and current requirements.

According to ESO (YouTube), the remake is expected to appear on April 21st, next Monday. If this is indeed the case, Microsoft would also be deviating from the norm in this regard: major releases appear on Tuesdays or Thursdays. In the same vein, ESO is also talking about a revised version of Fallout 3. It should be scheduled for release in 2026.
