Hard drive manufacturer Seagate is bringing out a new SSD. The ultra-compact SSD lives up to its name and is connected to the USB-C socket like a USB stick directly. Up to 2TB of storage space and 1000MB/s are offered.
Compact external SSD as USB stick
With dimensions of 70 × 20.4 × 12.5 mm (L × W × H), Seagates external SSDs are truly “ultra compact”, as most portable SSDs are a bit longer and significantly wider. The format of the Seagate SSD, on the other hand, is more reminiscent of a USB stick.
Just like one, the ultra-compact SSD is connected to the computer without cables. For this, a USB-C connector is integrated, which disappears under a cover cap for transport. A removable silicone cover protects against bumps so falling from 3m should be survivable. Additionally, some protection against dust and water is offered, which is underlined with the IP54 certification.
The lightweight 24G SSD should also find space on the keychain, for example, for which a lanyard is included. 35% recycled materials must be used in manufacturing.
Seagate talks about “transmission speeds of up to 1,000 MB/s” on large files. So, sequential flow rate is meant here. The press release does not show whether this only applies to reading or writing.
The 10Gbps USB SSD aka USB 3.2 Gen 2 uses as the interface. The SSD is compatible with various devices with the USB-C connection. These include Windows PCs, Macs, smartphones with Android and iOS or even game consoles.
Pricing and availability
The Seagate Ultra Compact SSD is said to be available this month at a price of 104.99 EUR (1 TB) and 189.99 euros (2 TB). In the Seagate store, the hourly prices are much higher at around 130 euros and 225 euros. With the online stores in the computer base price comparison, the Seagate Ultra Compact SSD currently has 110 euros and 175 euros.
The local fuse backup software is available with the Seagate Toolbox. There are also free trial subscriptions for Dropbox Backup and Mylio Photos for 6 months.
