ViewSonic expands its range of portable monitors with a model for gamers with a diagonal of 16 inches and 144 Hz. The VX1654 weighs 700 grams and is intended to enable mobile gaming where there is no fixed monitor or television . Power is delivered via USB-C.
Slightly smaller than the discontinued VX1755 model at 17 inches, the newcomer VX1654 also features a 1920×1080 pixel IPS panel and a nominal response time of 4ms. AMD FreeSync to synchronize frame rates of Radeon graphics cards and monitor is supported, but Nvidia G-Sync is not mentioned in the description. In combination with 144 Hz, a smooth gaming experience should be offered, which other monitors of this type also promise.
“Very fine” is only true to a limited extent
ViewSonic is promoting a “very thin” body, which apparently only measures less than 10mm in some places, otherwise the spec sheet says up to 17.85mm. The flip-up stand should allow for a tilt of 30 to 53 degrees. A carrying bag is included.

Power supply via USB-C
The monitor should consume a maximum of 11.6 watts of power. A power supply is “optional,” otherwise the connected computer’s USB-C port provides power. As long as the monitor itself has enough power, it should provide up to 60 watts over USB-C for connected devices.
IPS with 8 bits simulated
The IPS panel operates with a simulated 8-bit color depth (6-bit + FRC) and achieves a brightness of 250 cd/m² and a contrast ratio of 800:1.
The connections are two USB-C (including DisplayPort Alt Mode), a Mini-HDMI 2.0 and an audio jack (3.5mm). Don’t expect much from the 2 × 0.8 watt built-in speakers.
Pricing and availability
The ViewSonic VX1654 is now available at the recommended retail price of 229 euros. Pricing currently sits between the AOC Gaming 16G3 and the Asus ZenScreen MB16AHG, both of which also offer IPS with Full HD and 144Hz.
