Western Digital: New Hard Drive Products from 26TB to 208TB

Western Digital is introducing numerous new products based on magnetic storage. The internal WD Red Pro NAS HDD is now also available with a 26TB capacity. The external Drive G now also offers a maximum of 26TB. A whopping 208TB is accessible in the G-Raid8 Shuttle with eight drives.

The server models in the Ultastar and WD Gold series are now followed by a 26TB model in the WD Red Pro series for higher-end NAS. The WD260KFGX with 26TB has the same key data as the WD241KFGX with 24TB, except for the storage capacity. The 3.5″ 7,200 rpm hard drive achieves a throughput of 287 MB/s via the SATA interface. The cache holds 512 MB of data and uses no overlapping memory (SMR), enabling CMR technology.

WD Red Pro drives are designed for continuous operation and have a working capacity of 550 TB per year with a 5-year warranty. Power consumption is specified at 1.1 watts in standby, 3.6 watts in idle, and 6.0 watts for data transfer, which is also unchanged from the 24 TB version.

The WD Red Pro 26 TB is now available for €869.99 in the manufacturer’s online store.

G-Drive

A storage capacity of up to 26 TB is now available in the G-Drive, which is also sold under the Sankisk Professional brand. The Ultrastar series with 7,200 rpm are housed in the 210 × 133 × 41 mm aluminum housing, with models ranging from 6 TB to 24 TB to choose from. Data is transferred via the USB-C connection (10 Gbps) at up to 280 MB/s.

Formatted from the factory for macOS, is also supported, but re-formatting is required. The manufacturer’s warranty is 3 years. The price of the 26 TB G-Drive is $649.99 before tax. G-Drive Project

At 210 x 133 x 51 mm, the G-Drive Project is slightly larger. However, it not only accommodates Ultrastar hard drives from 6 TB to 26 TB, but also has a slot for a “Pro Blade SSD Mag.” External data storage for fast transfers (limited to 10 Gbps) can therefore be upgraded. The hard drives here operate at a maximum of 260 MB/s. A Thunderbolt-3 connection is also available. The warranty period is 5 years. The new 26 TB model will start at $999.99 in the US; it is not yet listed in this country.

The G-Raid family is also expanding

G-Raid Project 2

In the G-Raid product family, multiple hard drives are used in a RAID array in the external slot. With G-Raid Project 2, two hard drives are used for a maximum of 52 TB of storage and 520 MB/s read speed. This means that 26 TB hard drives are already installed, and we’re talking about Ultrastar models with 7,200 rpm.

At 210 x 133 x 103 mm, the external data storage is twice as large and, at over 3 kg, also about twice as heavy. As with the G-Drive Project, it offers Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C connectivity, as well as a Mag Pro Blade slot and a 5-year warranty. The G-Raid Project 2 with 52 TB costs $1,699.99 before tax.

There’s plenty of storage space with the G-Raid Shuttle models, as they feature four or even eight hard drives. The top models are also based on the 26-drive Ultrastar series and therefore come in at 104 TB (Shuttle 4) or 208 TB (Shuttle 8). Data transfer rates in RAID-5 mode, which is defined as Ex Works, reach up to 700 MB/s read and 850 MB/s write for the Shuttle4.

The byte of 8 hard drives in RAID 5 is significantly faster, so 1,700 MB/s read for the Shuttle8 and 1,500 MB/s are in the datasheet. With transfer rates, the Thunderbolt-3 connection becomes mandatory, as more than 1,100 MB/s are no longer possible via the USB-C port with 10 Gbps.

These external data carriers are not only enormous in terms of capacity. The Shuttle4 already measures 248 × 174 × 267 mm and weighs up to 7.76 kg. The Shuttle8 measures 245 x 174 x 385 mm and weighs 12.37 kg. Recommended retail prices are $4,499.99 (Shuttle4 with 108 TB) and $8,199.99 (Shuttle8 with 208 TB) each before tax (MSRP, USA).
