With Perplexity AI: Telekom, Ki-Phone will launch 36 comments this year
Telekom’s AI phone has left prototype status and would be on the market during this year. Behind it is a smartphone that should be mainly controlled via a multimodal AI assistant, so that the applications are back in the background after the network operator’s presentation.
Telekom had presented the MWC AI phone as a prototype based on its own T phone a year ago, but did not comment on a possible release at the time. That changed for MWC today, as the AI phone is expected to hit the market in Germany sometime this year.
Perplexity AI provides multimodal AI assistants
The technical information on the AI phone is currently in the background, the Telekom mainly concerned the interaction with the smartphone for the presentation in Barcelona. This should primarily be done in a no-app environment using the AI Perplexity Multimodal Assistant. Perplexity AI is a San Francisco AI startup founded in August 2022, which completed a new round of $500 million in funding in December last year and is currently valued at $9 billion.

The wizard should replace individual applications
The smartphone should be app-free in that as many requests as possible, which would normally run through individual apps, should be handled directly through the assistant in the future. Telekom gives an example of ordering taxis, reserving a table in the restaurant, translating in real time or answering general knowledge questions. The network operator understands the AI-Phone as a virtual butler that should always be kept apart. That’s why the range of functions also includes writing emails, starting calls, playing music or creating calendar entries – all within Perplexity IA and therefore without dedicated apps.
On the AI phone, the assistant should be accessible directly through the lock screen or by double pressing the power button. In addition to the assistant, there are also apps from Google Cloud AI, ElevenLabs and Picsart on the AI Phone, so the smartphone is not completely app-free. “This is the future of AI innovation for consumers,” said Claudia Nemat, board member of Telekom Technology and Innovation. “The days of the confusing app jungle are over.”

Telekom also wants to win back those who do not want to buy a new smartphone. To this end, the company is integrating the “Magenta AI” into the Meinmagenta app, through which selected AI offerings are to be made available. This step is to take place in the second quarter of 2025 and, in addition to Perplexity AI, also includes the services of Google Cloud AI, ElevenLabs and Picsart. The Gemini are actually used by Google, and ElevenLabs, in turn, can convert various inputs (input requests, URLs, documents) into podcasts with multiple speaker votes. And Picsart converts selfies or photos into AI-Avatars.
