GeForce RTX 5000 Super: 5080s and 5070 thanks to 3 GB chips with 24 and 18 GB GDDR7?

As soon as the first quarter has passed with countless Nvidia GeForce RTX 5000 releases, the song of the recently announced Tank Account, which has been known for very early yet, is scattered for a first rumor of a super refresh: with 3 GB GDDR7, there should be more .

3 GB GDDR7 chips for the RTX 5080 and 5070?

The thread on the Chinese Chiphell Forum, in which Panzerlied posted his “prediction,” actually addressed the question of how Nvidia implemented the 96GB graphics memory on the RTX Pro 6000, if the GPU is the same as on the RTX 5090.

Like the RTX 5090 (review), the RTX Pro 6000 is stocked with memory modules on both sides, but on one side. Two chips are connected to a 32-bit controller using the so-called Clamrell process. Theoretically, this translates to 64GB. Instead, all desktop RTX 5000s have 2GB GDDR7, as with the GPU (review) on the 3GB RTX Pro 6000 chips. The result is 96 GB.

So far, only the RTX Pro 6000 and Mobile GeForce RTX 5090 laptop GPUs use these 3 GB modules, all others use the 2 GB variants. Aside from a political decision on NVIDIA’s part, the reason for this is still the lack of availability of 3 GB chips as a background in the rumor mill.

According to the Panzerlied, Nvidia is now planning to use the 3 GB chips for other graphics cards for a Super Edition for a Blackwell refresh, probably a Super Edition. Specifically, the RTX 5080 Super with 24 GB instead of 16 GB and the Super with 18 GB instead of 12 GB GDDR7.

Enjoy with caution

Even if the tank song was the last, for example with the “three-piece” PCB of the RTX 5090 FE, months before the release, it’s still important to remain skeptical, especially regarding leaks regarding storage expansion. Whether 2 or 3 GB of large chips are used depends solely on the manufacturer’s willingness in the event of sufficient availability.

Recent leaks of an RTX 5080 with 24 GB suggested that this model could have already been planned with 3 GB of chips, but in the end, Nvidia decided against it. A super refresh is not expected before 2026 anyway.
