For today’s release of the standard version of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle (test), Bethesda releases “Update 1”, which fixes many errors and adds new graphics options with Full Ray Tracing ( Path Tracing), provided that the graphics card offers at least 12 GB of VRAM. The publisher also promises AMD FSR.

Full ray tracing comes with Update 1

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle officially launches today for all players, after Premium Edition owners have been able to play since December 6. Developer MachineGames and publisher Bethesda have only promised full ray tracing (path tracing) for December 9 and the first major update.

RT for shadows, highlights and indirect light

The corresponding “Update 1” is now available and expands the game’s graphics menu with a new entry for Full Ray Tracing (Path Tracing). Indiana Jones and the Great Circle already used ray tracing before the current update for realistic lighting using Ray Traced Global Illumination (RTGI). With the new “Full RT” setting, additional options for “RT Sun Shadows”, “RT Reflections” and “RT Indirect Illumination” can be enabled in-game.

An Nvidia graphics card with 12 GB VRAM or more is required

The new options are only available on Nvidia graphics cards and only on models with at least 12 GB of VRAM. Older flagships like the 10GB RTX 3080 are excluded from ray tracing effects. Among current Nvidia models, the GeForce RTX 4060 (Ti) with 8 GB falls through the cracks.

AMD FSR will follow later

AMD graphics cards are completely left out when it comes to path tracing. At launch, the game is also sparse in terms of supported scaling and frame generation technologies; more precisely, there is still only Nvidia DLSS for GeForce RTX graphics cards. AMD FSR has at least promised Bethesda a later update, without going into details. Bethesda is not commenting on the missing Intel XeSS.

Better performance with only 8 GB of VRAM

As the changelog clearly shows, Update 1 fixes many errors in gameplay, graphics, missions and quests, UI and in general.

There are also PC-specific bug fixes that aim to improve the performance of graphics cards with just 8GB of VRAM in large tiers. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was demanding in the test in terms of graphics memory when selecting texture options. For example, 8 GB is clearly not enough for the highest hypertextures, even at Full HD, and there is only a slight stutter. And even lower Giga or even Ultra textures are still too heavy for an 8 GB graphics card. So the system requirements are that much higher.

Bug fixes with HDR and DLSS

Bugs fixed on PC also include display errors when combining HDR and DLSS, reflection flickering at high frame rates, missing effects on AMD graphics cards in Peru level, and black rectangles in some constellations rendering only on AMD GPUs.

DLSS can cause problems

Bethesda is also aware that performance may be reduced when starting the game with DLSS. In this case, players need to go to the graphics menu, briefly switch from DLSS to TAA and back to DLSS again, then close the menu.
