Huawei announces the Mate X6 foldable smartphone for Germany after its launch in China. EMUI 15 was also introduced for the Mate X6, which could be based on a newer Android than Android 12, which serves as the basis for the currently used EMUI 14.2.
The global launch event announced at the beginning of December also plans which Huawei products will arrive in Germany in the coming weeks and will be available in stores here.
Huawei Mate X6: The thin foldable
The Mate X6 is Huawei’s new foldable with an almost square foldable screen on the inside and a second screen on the outside. Unlike the tri-foldable Huawei Mate XT, it offers a hinge and separate screens.

The Mate X6 is one of the thinnest foldables on the market. When unfolded, it is only 4.6mm thick. The smartphone weighs 239 grams and measures 156.6 × 73.78/144.04 × 9.85/4.6 mm. The Mate X6 is waterproof to IPX8 and, according to Huawei, can survive 2 meters deep for at least 30 minutes.
Two bright OLED displays
The Mate X6 also has more to offer when it comes to screens than its predecessor. The internal foldable LTPO OLED display measures 7.93 inches, offers a resolution of 2,440 × 2,240 pixels, a variable refresh rate between 1 and 120 Hz, and a maximum brightness of 1,800 nits. As mentioned at the beginning, it is almost square when unfolded. In the predecessor, the Mate X5, this screen measures 7.85 inches.

The exterior OLED screen, meanwhile, measures 6.45 inches, offers Full HD resolution as well as a variable refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz, but is bright up to a maximum of 2,500 cd/m². The Mate X5 here offers a 6.4-inch diagonal screen.
Both screens are protected by Huawei’s second-generation Kulun Glass.
For the first time with EMUI 15
While Huawei currently uses EMUI 14.2 on its own smartphones like the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra (test), which still uses Android 12 in AOSP, the Mate X5 will ship with EMUI 15. Even if the new version brings some new features such as new lock screen themes, new multitasking capabilities and the ability to run three apps at the same time, it is not yet clear which version of Android it is based on and whether Huawei will also update it here. EMUI 15 is not only expected to launch for the Mate X6, but will be launched for other smartphones as well. However, there is no information on this yet.

Quad-camera system with spectral sensor
The Mate X6 is equipped with a quad-camera system, with three lenses already familiar from other Huawei smartphones. The main camera uses a 50-megapixel sensor with a variable aperture from f/1.4 to f/4.0, like the one on the Pura 70 Pro+. The 48-megapixel telephoto lens with 4x optical zoom is known from the Mate 60 Pro, while the 40-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens is taken from the Pura 70 Ultra (review). The fourth sensor is a spectral sensor intended to improve color representation and is also used in the new Mate 70, which will not be officially released in Germany at the moment.

Additionally, the Mate X6 offers an 8-megapixel selfie camera both outdoors and indoors.
Battery and fast charging
There are small differences in the battery depending on the model. In the model with 12 GB of RAM it offers a capacity of 5,110 mAh, while in the 16 GB model it is 5,200 mAh. You can charge up to 66 watts via cable and up to 50 watts wirelessly. Wireless reverse charging to charge other devices via the back of the smartphone is supported at up to 7.5 watts.
Wi-Fi, NFC, GPS
WLAN is supported according to 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax with 2.4 and 5 GHz (2 × 2 MIMO, HE160, 1024 QAM, 8 spatial streams ringing MU-MIMO), Bluetooth is installed in version 5.2. NFC is also integrated. A-GPS (dual band L1 + L5), GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo, QZSS and NavIC are supported as location services.
New SoC: Kirin 9020
Huawei does not officially provide any information about the SoC, but according to reports, the new Kirin 9020 will be used, as in the Mate 70. This should allow a performance improvement to the level of a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The Kirin 9020 is reportedly approximately 40% faster than the Kirin 9010 previously used by Huawei.
Prices and availability
There is no price for the Mate X6 in Germany yet, but you can already get a voucher for 200 euros directly from Huawei. This is valid from January 17, 2025 to February 26, 2025, which suggests that you will be able to order the Mate X6 from January 17.
However, we do not yet know in which memory configurations it will ultimately be available in this country.
