Shortly before the end of the year, CachyOS will release new installation media and will rely on an automatically optimized kernel and new performance improvements. A new graphics package manager is poised to surpass YaST under openSUSE and Asahi Remix upgrades to Fedora 41. RDNA4 and Intel drivers are also topics of the week.
CachyOS with AutoFDO in the 13th version
As a rolling release, CachyOS based on Arch Linux is continuously updated and updates are also available to all users. Since installation media becomes obsolete over time due to numerous changes and fixes, an up-to-date image is always provided, even with a rolling release. This also provides insight into the development status of a distribution.
With the 13th version of CachyOS, the operating system is now based on a kernel optimized by AutoFDO. This is created, tested automatically and knowledge of the impact of the parameters is used to optimize the source code and obtain an overall more efficient and effective kernel.
With the new OpenCL driver and scx_loader for scheduler management, more performance and transparent scheduler changes should be possible. Optimizations for Bluetooth and Wifi complete the version. The full patch notes are available on the CachyOS blog.

YQPkg – new graphical package management for openSUSE
A new graphical package manager is being developed for openSUSE-based Linux distributions to attract new users. The QT-based solution relies on libzypp, which takes care of package management and dependency resolution in the background. Due to its early stage of development, gpg key management and repository updates are not performed automatically, but must be manually initiated by the user before use. Overall, the tool is intended to be an alternative to established YaST and not dependent on it in any way. The announcement can be viewed directly on the opensuse.org blog.

Asahi Linux receives Fedora 41 update
The Asahi Linux project aims to develop the free Apple operating system Bringing silicon-based Macs. In cooperation with Fedora, Fedora Asahi Remix was created, which, as the name suggests, is based on Fedora. With KDE Plasma 6 and Wayland, modern Linux features are available for all Apple-ready M1 and M2 series. The Remix 41 version uses Fedora 41 and, in addition to x86 emulation, also supports Vulkan 1.4 for Apple Silicon games.
Signs of life from AMD’s RDNA4
It won’t be long before the release of the next generation of AMD graphics cards and code submissions for open source Linux projects are rumored to increase signs of an imminent new release. The included code for GFX12 (RDNA4) allows the use of ACO (AMD Compiler), which serves as an alternative to the LLVM backend developed by AMD.
Intel offers its own Battlemage PPA for Ubuntu 24.10
Intel’s recently released new generation of Battlemage graphics cards (Linux review on Techconseil) is still on shaky ground under Linux. Just for testing, an unstable software preview had to be used. To demonstrate the capabilities of its new graphics cards under Linux, Intel has released a PPA in collaboration with Canonical, available as an Intel Graphics Preview and providing the latest drivers. In addition to focusing on productive software, the drivers also allow full use of hardware encoders such as AV1.
