Aloft is a sky survival game about building islands and exploring them. It was released today on in Early Access. The title was developed by Astrolabe Interactive and published by Funcom.

Fungal infection ravages islands

There are many islands in the clouds that want to be discovered and developed. And even though Aloft is supposed to be comfortable, there is an ecosystem that threatens to collapse: a fungal epidemic is devouring all life and can only be eliminated with the right antidote. Mushroom monsters infest the islands which can only be killed by the player’s hand. There is also a raging hurricane, which further destroys the ecosystem.

Your own home in paradise

Each island in Aloft can be transformed into a flying ship to further explore the skies. There are many types of islands that have different resources to collect. This can be used to build tools or a new house, cook food, and upgrade the ship with its steering wheel, rudder, and sails. It’s also worth exploring new islands, as new technologies might be discovered or ancient ruins might reveal secrets of the past. The wind is Aloft’s best friend: not only does it transport the floating islands in the sail, but the manufacturing processes can be automated using wind turbines, cables and belts.

As you travel through the clouds, many different animals and seeds can be brought to the home island. The seeds are planted in your own garden so you can then cook recipes and the animals are kept in green spaces. If you take good care of the animals, they will also protect the island. And if the biodiversity of the islands is restored, the player will receive special resources as a reward.

Aloft currently costs 25 euros on Steam and can be played solo or cooperatively – with up to seven other players.

Early Access

The developers announced on Steam that the title will be in early access for at least a year. During Early Access and beyond, developers attempt to involve players in the development process:

Open and transparent with our is our top priority. Using playtesting, surveys, and public demos, we actively engaged with our players to gather valuable feedback. This approach has always been essential in our development process and always will be, especially with regard to future patches.

Regardless, additional content is already planned for future updates. Among other things, new biomes as well as weather events, game mechanics and game optimizations are to follow.
